The trap: the best criterion is not always the right slot

Here is a Rankle grid, with the real world ranks of the eight countries on the eight criteria, exactly as the game uses them. The star marks the optimal placement, the one the game computes at the end of every game.

Grid recomputed whenever the game data is updated. Rank 1 = first of 195 countries; “—” = no data (counts 200).

Play it “on reflex”, in table order, giving each country its best criterion still free: you end on a total of 434, against 190 for the optimum. That is 44 % efficiency — with 8 countries out of 8 in the wrong slot.

Look at the Russia row. It ranks 1st in the world by area, and yet the optimum gives it “Highest point”, where it is only 20th. Why? Because Australia (6th by area) has nothing better anywhere else, while Russia is good almost everywhere: the big power is the country you can afford to place badly. Conversely, Monaco has a single good slot — “GDP per capita”, rank 1 — and losing it costs close to 200 points.

Five rules that hold

1. Read all eight criteria before placing the first country

The criteria are shown from the start; the countries arrive one by one. Before touching anything, spot the rare slots — those where only a handful of countries are good: highest point, UNESCO sites, tourist arrivals, Olympic medals — and the wide slots, where half the planet does fine: access to electricity, urban population, life expectancy.

2. Keep the rare slots for those who have nothing else

A country that is good on one criterion only must get it. A country good everywhere can settle for an average slot. When a big country arrives early, resist giving it the best slot: ask who else, among the 195, might need it.

3. Be wary of microstates

Monaco, Liechtenstein, Qatar, Singapore: often first on a wealth or density criterion, and with no data — hence 200 — on sport, forest or army criteria. A misplaced microstate costs more than any other country.

4. Accept sacrificing a country

With eight countries and eight slots, someone ends up in a bad slot. Choose who: the country that is average everywhere takes a rank of 60 without drama, where an extreme country would take 190.

5. Know the podium of each criterion

You do not need the values, only who is ahead. The table below, read from the game data, gives the top three of each of the 41 criteria — on percentage criteria several countries tie at 100 % and the order between them is alphabetical.

Frequently asked

Do I need to know the exact figures?
No. Rankle compares ranks, not values. Knowing that Brazil is in the top five by area is enough; knowing it covers 8.5 million km² adds nothing.
How does the game find the optimal placement?
By examining the 40,320 possible arrangements of eight countries over eight criteria (with pruning that abandons hopeless branches early) and keeping the one with the lowest sum of ranks. It is the same computation that produces the grid on this page.
Why is my efficiency low when every country is on a good criterion?
Because efficiency measures the whole grid. Eight “good” choices that steal the best slots from each other are worth less than an arrangement where two countries are sacrificed so the other six are perfect.
